Amid all the 100-year auto celebrations taking place a significant diamond (60th) anniversary may have been overlooked. It honours the anniversary of one of the greatest auto engines ever created, equal to the Chevy Small Block, the Chrysler Hemi, and the Ferrari V-12. Arriving just two years after the end of WW2, the Jaguar XK 6-cylinder engine was built in different variations until 1994. It drove Jaguar to five LeMans victories in C-Type and D-Type racers. It was fitted to sports and touring cars, including legendary models like the Mark2 and the fabulous XJ6, both contenders for the most beautiful sedan of all time.
The XK engine was conceived during the last years of WW2 by Jaguar head William Lyons, chief engineer William Heynes, chief experimental engineer Wally Hassan, chief engine designer Claude Baily, and Harry Mundy. The XK 120 that was unveiled at the London Motor Show in 1948 was billed as "the sports car that had everything." Twin-overhead camshafts and hemispherical combustion chambers were among its advanced features. The XK 6 started at 3442 cc.'s with 160 hp, soon achieved 250 hp in the racing D-Type. The Mark 2 sedan arrived with 210 hp, which made it a frequent winner in touring car races. Like the XK 120 in which it first appeared this engine also looked good. Raise the hood on any XK-equipped Jag to see mechanical engineering at its finest.

Thanks to Ruth for both today’’s write-up and photograph:
Normally, television imitates life. It polishes the edges of life’’s reality and makes it seem more glamorous. Well, here is an example of life imitating television, edges and all! I call this the “Homer Cactus” after Homer Simpson. I found this beauty in the Anza-Borrego desert in southern California while hiking with a group of friends. We had a great laugh!
The red barrel cactus, Ferocactus cylindraceus, is found in Arizona, California and northern Mexico at elevations of 600-1500 meters (2000-5000 feet). It is found growing amongst phenomenal species such as Joshua trees (Yucca brevifolia) in the Mojave desert and amongst the Fouquieria splendens (ocotillo) in the Anza-Borrego and Ocotillo Wells deserts. This species of barrel cactus can tolerate temperatures as low as -7 ºC (20 ºF). Deserts of southwestern USA and northern Mexico often receive massive flash floods and extreme heat. Ferocactus tend to grow slightly tilted toward the south, because of the additional sun exposure. If you are ever lost in the desert without a compass, remember to look for this feature to find south.
Ferocactus cylindraceus can reach a height of 2.5 meters (8 feet) with a width of up to 30 cm (12 inches). Blooms found on the top of the cylinder, like a hat, are yellow, red or orange. In general, spring is the best time to view wildflowers in the desert, but these cactuses bloom a bit later in July and late summer.
For more information, read the Flora of North America account for Ferocactus cylindraceus. Additional photographs are available from Calphotos: Ferocactus cylindraceus.

“Those who believe that Jonathan Demme went all soft with Philadelphia and never recovered may not be reassured by his latest movie, an ensemble tale of family pathology gussied up with verite camera work, world music, and improvising actors both trained and not,” writes Ella Taylor in the Voice. “You can find the worst and the best of Demme in Rachel Getting Married, which may be an avowed fan’’s fond farewell to Robert Altman, but it’’s still a middlebrow domestic drama beating its wings against an experimental frame.”
“With only the occasional narrative intrusion, the final sequence is one of the more joyous nuptials captured on film,” writes Andrew Schenker in Slant. “From the appealingly informal ceremony with its new-age inflections - and interlaced with cutaway shots to a genuinely moved [Anne] Hathaway - to a series of generically varied musical performances during the reception (Demme’’s commitment to cultural diversity means the guests perform in rock, folk, jazz and R&B modes), the wedding finds the director taking control of his film and imbuing it with the celebratory warmth that comes from a genuine embrace of democratic plurality.”
